Presentation: Where Education is a Crime
Imagine that you are in a class interrupted by armed men in military uniforms and then taken away. You are told that, because of your religion, you are being expelled from the university and barred from ever attending any institution of higher learning in the country.
This disturbing scene seems from an Orwell novel. In Iran, however, the government has for 30 years carried out a systematic policy of denying access to higher education to members of the Bahá’í community, the country’s largest religious minority.
We will explore this systematic governmental denial of basic human rights by showing a short excerpt from the Amnesty International sponsored documentary film "Education Under Fire" followed by a discussion on human rights.
